Definition

A cited domain is a website that an AI answer references as a source. Grouping citations by domain and by domain type (community, directory, publisher, brand site, research) shows where an answer engine is getting its picture of a category.

Why it matters

It converts an abstract goal into a work list. In our Q3 2026 benchmark, reddit.com was cited in all twelve categories measured, which makes community presence a category-independent requirement rather than an opinion.

How to measure it

Aggregate cited URLs by registrable domain, classify each domain by type, and report the share each type holds. Track how many distinct questions each domain was cited for, not just totals.
