Definition

The share of citation sources in relevant AI answers that belong to your pages/domain.

Why it matters

Comparing only against listed competitors makes almost any brand look like it is winning, because the sources that actually dominate AI answers are usually communities, directories and publishers that are not on anyone's competitor list.

How to measure it

Rank every cited domain in the answer set by citation count and report your position and percentage among all of them. Also report how many distinct questions cited you, which is harder to inflate than raw counts.

Is GEO different from SEO?

They overlap on technical access and content quality, but GEO measures the answer itself — whether the brand is named, recommended and cited — instead of a ranking position.

How often should results be remeasured?

Keep the question set stable and rerun on a fixed cadence, then compare like with like. Changing questions and cadence at the same time makes results incomparable.

Does being cited mean being recommended?

No. A page can be cited as background while a competitor is the one actually recommended. The two are reported separately.
