Short answer: there is no single best GEO tool, and any list that claims otherwise is ranking by affiliate payout or by who wrote it. The tools differ less in features than in how each number is produced, and in what the entry price actually buys. Judge them on six measurement questions, compare entry tiers by prompts, engines and refresh rather than by price, and check the free basics on your own site before you pay for anything.
We build one of these tools. Read this with that in mind: everything below is either a verifiable fact taken from a vendor's own pricing page or a stated methodology, and where we are the weaker option we say so.
The six questions that separate these products
Feature lists in this category are nearly identical. Every vendor shows a mention rate, citations and a competitor comparison. The differences are in how each number is produced, which is where a product is either sound or decorative. These are the six questions we would put to any vendor, including ourselves.
| Question | Why it separates them |
|---|---|
| Can I see the question set, and does it contain brand names? | A question naming your brand will be answered with your brand. That is an echo, not visibility. It happened to us: 13 of 15 generated questions contained the brand name, and the score read 13% when the honest value was zero. |
| Are citations counted from the answer body or the retrieval pool? | Engines assemble a candidate pool far larger than what they cite. Counting the pool inflated our own citation figures by two to four times before we fixed it. |
| Is competitor detection the same code path as my own brand? | Any asymmetry moves in the customer's favour, which is exactly what makes it sell. One of our early versions showed a brand at 31% share of voice and rank two; measured symmetrically it was 0% and last. |
| What happens to a run that fails? | Shown as a gap is correct. Shown as 0% creates fake declines. Silently excluded raises the average, and a trend line that drops long runs without saying so is lying by omission. |
| Can I open any number and reach the answer text? | Without the stored answer, engine, date and cited URLs you cannot tell a detection bug from a real change, and you will see both. |
| What does it cost to rerun, and how often can I afford to? | Quota is the binding constraint. A monthly budget gives you twelve data points a year against a metric that varies between identical runs. |
If a vendor answers all six precisely, the product is probably sound whatever the interface looks like. Where an answer is vague, that is where the number is being made. The question set deserves the most attention, because it decides everything downstream; our guide to building a prompt set covers how to write one that does not flatter you.
How the market actually splits
There are two product shapes, and they are not substitutes for each other.
- AI-native platforms were built for answer measurement from the start: Profound, Peec AI, OtterlyAI, AthenaHQ, Scrunch, Evertune, Brandlight, Rankscale, Trakkr, Knowatoa, Goodie, LLMrefs, AI Peekaboo, SE Visible, ZipTie.ai, Bluefish AI and InsightWonder. They go deeper on prompt sets, citation evidence and competitor sets. They are younger and smaller, and several price per brand.
- Modules inside an existing SEO or content suite include the Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit, Ahrefs Brand Radar, Similarweb AI Search Intelligence, Conductor, Nightwatch, Frase and Writesonic. They are shallower on answer evidence, but you already have the seat, the billing and the rest of the SEO workflow.
The honest version of the buying decision is simple. If AI answers are one line in a monthly report, the suite module is usually enough and may cost little or nothing extra. If AI answers are the thing you are accountable for, you will want the deeper evidence layer, and a suite module tends to run out of depth quickly.
What the entry price actually buys
Comparing headline prices is the most common mistake in this category, because the entry tiers measure very different amounts. The useful unit is how many prompts, on how many engines, refreshed how often. The table below is taken from each vendor's public pricing page as recorded in our comparison dataset.
| Vendor | Entry price | What the entry tier covers |
|---|---|---|
| OtterlyAI | $29/mo (Lite) | 15 prompts on 4 engines; Claude, AI Mode and Gemini are paid add-ons |
| Profound | $99/mo (Starter, billed yearly) | ChatGPT only, 50 prompts; the full engine list needs higher tiers |
| Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit | $99/mo per domain, billed annually | 25 custom prompts and one user; ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and an unspecified "Google AI" |
| Peec AI | $95/mo | Daily refresh with the main engines included; Claude, DeepSeek and Grok are add-ons |
| AthenaHQ | $295/mo (first paid tier) | Credit-based; the free Essential tier is limited to five engines |
| Evertune | $800/mo | 100,000 prompts across 11 models |
| Brandlight | Not published | Demo-gated, with no self-serve signup and no trial |
Two lessons fall out of this. First, a low entry price usually means a small sample: the Lite plan's 15 prompts is too few to draw share-of-voice conclusions from, and a single-engine tier tells you nothing about the others. Second, credit-based pricing at Rankscale, AthenaHQ, AI Peekaboo, ZipTie.ai, LLMrefs and Ahrefs Brand Radar makes the real monthly cost depend on engine count and cadence, so model your own volume before comparing.
Where to compare specifics
Rather than reproduce a feature grid that goes stale, we keep one page per vendor and one per pairing, generated from the same dataset and marked with what we could not verify:
- Head-to-head comparisons cover engine coverage, pricing shape and who each tool is for.
- Alternatives pages give one page per vendor, including what they do better than us.
- Choosing a GEO tool expands the six questions above into a full evaluation checklist.
- Brand share in AI answers explains how share of voice should be counted, which is where most dashboards disagree.
Where we are the wrong choice
Three cases, stated plainly, because a list that never says this is an advert:
- You need one dashboard for SEO and AI together. A suite module wins on workflow. We do not replace your rank tracker.
- You need many markets and cities from day one. Multi-location measurement multiplies the question set and the quota. That is a budgeted decision, not a switch, and some vendors package it more cheaply.
- You want a number without a method. We show the question set, the failed runs and the raw answers, and that makes our chart less flattering than some.
What to do before you buy anything
Run the free checks first, because three of the most common causes of absence are not a tooling problem at all.
- Fetch your pages as each named AI agent. OpenAI documents its crawlers and their purposes in its bots documentation, and Perplexity does the same in its crawler guide. If robots.txt or a firewall blocks the agent that fetches pages for live answers, no tool will show you in those answers.
- Fetch the same pages with JavaScript disabled. If your product names, prices or answers only appear after scripts run, many crawlers see an empty shell.
- Read the first two sentences under each heading out of context. Answer engines lift self-contained passages. If the passage only makes sense after the paragraph before it, it is unlikely to be quoted. Our post on whether ChatGPT cites your website shows how to check what is actually being cited.
If any of those fails, no measurement product will change your position. It will only tell you more precisely that you are absent. Fix access and structure first, then buy measurement to track whether the fixes worked.
